Music directors getting "inspired" by foreign music isnt a new thing. I was surfing for music plagiarsm and came across this site http://www.itwofs.com/. Its latest entry was about a song from the movie Dabang -"Munni badnaam hui". Okay, this post has got nothing to do with inspector Chulbul Pandey.
Sometimes I feel grateful to music directors for lifting some brilliant pieces of music from elsewhere. If they wouldnt have done that, I lose a chance to hear some beautiful composition. [ Whoever the composer be].
And there are times when I felt cheated. When I hear the original song, years later.
This blog entry is about such a song.
I was in my high school when I happened to hear a song during a long drive. It was from a movie called Dastak, music directed by Rajesh Roshan and sung by Abhijeet. "Tumhe kaise mein batao, Tumhe kaise mein kahoon.". I was at the window seat of the car, the cool wind of the night hitting my face.I felt that the song was heavenly...
It had always been in my favourite list since then.
Years passed..
Few months back I was watching the Pierce Brosnan version of " The Thomas Crown Affair". I was totally taken aback when I heard the song "Windmills of your mind" sung by Sting which was similar to the one from Dastak.
Well.. Apparently Rajesh Roshan got "inspired" by the music by Michel Legrand,Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman who made the song "Windmills of your mind" for the 1968 film TTCA. It had won the Academy Award for the best original song in 1969. Seems like I have good tastes afterall :)
This time, more than the music the lyrics striked me. Thats what I want to share with you.
Windmills of Your Mind - Bergmans
Round,
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel.
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnaval balloon
Like a carousell that's turning
Running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of it's own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream.
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle your head
Why did summer go so quickly
Was it something that I said
Lovers walking allong the shore,
Leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand
Pictures hanging in a hallway
And a fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circle that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Pictures hanging in a hallway
And the fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair
Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
I love you for this! :-)
